This one detail decides whether your timeline is three weeks or seven, and almost nobody states it plainly. When you order an FBI Identity History Summary through an approved channeler, the result arrives as a signed electronic PDF, often within hours. That printout is accepted for federal apostille.

Why people think otherwise

Requesting directly from the FBI rather than through a channeler can mean waiting for a posted hard copy, which adds weeks. Because that path exists, a lot of guidance assumes the paper original is required. It is not.

What this changes about the sequence

It removes an entire physical leg. Fingerprints go to the channeler electronically at a Live Scan location, the report returns as a PDF, and the printout goes to Washington. At no point does anything need to be posted to you and then posted onward.

What still has to be right

Print the complete document, every page, unaltered. The apostille attaches to the report as issued. And watch the issue date rather than the apostille date: most countries want the report issued within three or six months of when you submit, and an apostille cannot rescue a report that has aged out.
